FREE Bionics Japan Co., Ltd. introduced “FREE Walk,” a wearable exoskeleton robot for walking assistance, at CareTEX Tokyo 2026 Summer. Developed by FREE Bionics, a company spun out of Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the system is designed to support walking training and rehabilitation for people with lower-limb paralysis, ranging from complete to incomplete paralysis.
FREE Walk can be adjusted to accommodate different users, including adjustments to body width and leg length, allowing a single unit to be used with a broad range of patients. According to the company’s official specifications, the robot weighs 20 kg, supports users weighing up to 100 kg, provides a walking speed of up to 2 km/h, and has a battery operating time of approximately two hours. Its design also incorporates an adjustable torso fixation mechanism, a hip structure that opens to 90 degrees, and features intended to prevent foot drop.
The system is designed for use in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities where therapists support patients in walking training. In Japan, FREE Bionics also offers rental options, demonstrations, and trial sessions in addition to product sales, giving healthcare and rehabilitation providers opportunities to evaluate the equipment and its suitability for their users before considering full-scale adoption.
