SeatSense real-time seat occupancy solution - SENSATIVE [InnoTrans 2026]
SENSATIVE introduced SeatSense at InnoTrans 2026, marking the company’s first rail-oriented solution and underscoring that the company is based in Lund, Sweden. Founded in 2013, SENSATIVE has built its business around sensor data and is now extending that foundation to understanding how seats inside rail vehicles are actually used.
SeatSense is a compact sensor system that is mounted with double-sided adhesive tape and can cover one or two seats per unit. It is fully rail-certified, has a battery life of at least five years and is said to identify a seated passenger with more than 99% accuracy. The collected data is transmitted via Laura WAN to one gateway per train and then aggregated in Sensative’s back end, where seat occupancy is visualized live.
According to the company, the information can support revenue management by comparing sold tickets with actual seat usage, and it can also be used to guide passengers toward quieter areas or vacant seats. With SeatSense, SENSATIVE positions its sensor platform as a practical rail tool for visibility into occupancy and operational efficiency, with further details available at sensative.com.

00:00 We are from SENSATIVE. My name is Niclas Oehrn, and we work with all types of sensor data.
00:08 The company was founded in 2013, and the first thing we made was sensors.
00:15 Those sensors can detect different kinds of presence and the data behind it as well.
00:21 So you have sensors, and then you have the platform to understand the sensor data. What do you do with that data?
00:27 That is why we are here, and this is our first time at InnoTrans.
00:31 We are presenting the first rail solution in this company's history.
00:34 It all started a couple of years ago when a major rail operator in the UK approached us with a problem.
00:42 They knew their ticket sales, but they did not know exactly how their seats were occupied.
00:48 They asked us, "Can you solve this for us?"
00:51 And that ended up becoming the solution we are presenting here today.
00:55 It is a sensor that tells you whether a seat is occupied or not.
00:59 We can then provide that data to the operator, who can use it for multiple different use cases.
01:07 The sensor itself is small, does not weigh much, and is mounted with double-sided adhesive tape.
01:15 The sensor itself is fully rail-certified.
01:18 The battery lifetime starts at a minimum of 5 years.
01:22 This sensor also has an accuracy of over 99% for identifying a seated passenger.
01:30 It identifies whether a person is sitting in the seat.
01:34 One sensor is mounted with double-sided adhesive tape, and it lasts for the lifetime of the sensor itself.
01:42 This sensor identifies two seats or one seat, so you have one per two seats that are installed.
01:49 Once installed, all the data travels to one gateway per train.
01:55 It communicates using a wireless frequency called Laura WAN.
01:59 This has a long reach.
02:02 So, you only need one gateway connected to the train's internet access.
02:05 Then everything goes to our back-end server after that.
02:09 That gives us live data on exactly which seats are occupied by a customer.
02:15 That could be used for revenue management, comparing ticket sales with actual seat usage.
02:23 Or it could be used to guide passengers to quieter areas,
02:28 or simply to give passengers information about where they should sit and which seats are available, or for operational efficiency.
02:36 If you want to know more about exact seat occupancy, you can always write to us and reach out through our homepage.
02:43 It is sensative.com.
02:45 Then you can find SeatSense there, which is the product we offer for rail.
02:50 Thank you very much.
