Optical fiber sensing ecosystem - Avalon Technologies Limited [InnoTrans 2026]
At InnoTrans 2026, Avalon Technologies Limited introduced its “Optical Fiber Sensing Eco System,” centered on optical fiber sensing technology. Headquartered in Chennai, India, the company provides globally integrated, high-reliability, high-mix electronics manufacturing services (EMS), and at the show it showcased a sensing business that extends beyond its core EMS into railway and infrastructure monitoring.
At the booth, the company demonstrated a sensor that measures wavelength changes inside the fiber and explained that it can read waveform changes caused by stretching or compression. It can be used as a strain gauge and also functions as an accelerometer, supporting dynamic tracking in railway systems as well as health monitoring for elevators and escalators.
Avalon Technologies Limited also referred to railway projects under way in Hong Kong, introducing a setup in which sensors are mounted on pantographs to measure contact force and help predict brush wear. In another system, it collects wheel vibration and flange height data, then feeds them into an AI transformer model trained on maintenance records and passenger-train data to calculate a daily health index. Engineers can check the condition of each wheel on the system’s MMI screen.

00:00 Hello, we are Avalon Technologies.
00:02 We are from Hong Kong.
00:03 We mainly do optical fiber sensing technology and here is our fiber optical sensing ecosystem which includes an interrogator and our sensor.
00:15 So our sensor can measure the wavelength change on the fiber.
00:21 So this is low fiber and I can pull on it.
00:24 It will have a waveform change and also we can make this into a strain gauge which is used in a lot of railway systems.
00:32 So when I press on it,
00:33 it will be a string gauge reading and also an asometer which is also used a lot in dynamic tracking in railways.
00:42 So other than railways we also do lifts and escalator monitoring.
00:46 So we monitor the health of the lift and the escalator.
00:52 So let's move on to the railway industry.
00:55 We currently have a few projects in Hong Kong.
00:59 So this one is a pantograph from a third rail system.
01:03 We install our sensor on the pantograph and measure the contact force on the pantograph and we can predict the degradation of the brush.
01:15 And another project that we have is a rolling stock AI monitoring system where we put a sensor on the track.
01:23 And then we monitor the vibration of the wheel balances and the flange height.
01:27 And then we sum it up and do an overall health index of each wheel.
01:33 So maybe you can understand this better with this video.
01:37 So when the train passes by we will record all the vibration details.
01:41 And then we will segment each wheel's vibration data.
01:46 And then put it through our AI transformer model which is trained with real maintenance records and real passenger trains.
01:54 And then we can predict the health index daily.
01:58 And as you can see the blue line is the predicted result from our sensor.
02:05 And then the engineer can view all the wheels on the MMI of our system.
02:10 That's about it. Thank you.
